Taking Care of your Teeth

All of us need to take care of our teeth. Other people may need special services or facilities for their dental care while others have physical disabilities which may need surgery. Those with learning disabilities may show over anxiety therefore they need to be constantly reassured that it’s ok to see the dentist. Those with medical problems may need added care or precautions and dentists must be able to deal with each case. Those with special dental needs may also need extra arrangements like the dentist can visit the patient at his/her home or the patient may need to be admitted to special health centers. These people with special needs may require general anesthesia or sedation.

In most cases the patient’s doctor or dentist refers him/her to such clinics so that his/her special needs may be attended to. There are also local dental services which accepts walk in patients. Usually, the doctor or dentist has to write a referral to the local dental service together with the patient’s x-rays and dental history. The dentist will also require any medical history from the patient together with the kind of medicines he/she is currently taking. The patient must also reveal his/her hospital consultant, family doctor, and or any recent allergies and operations he/she may have. Any anxieties of concerns of the patient must be made known to the dentist as well.

A lot of patients have their own preferences regarding the time of day they may be treated. An evening appointment may not be best for a patient who will keep worrying the whole day or will get easily tired. Other patients may require that they need to be seen by their dentist at the same time each appointment. Treatment clinics must be accessible enough. They must have wheelchair access for patients who have mobility problems. Children who have medical conditions or have learning disabilities may be referred to the local dental service by their health supervisor, dentist, or doctor. It is important for a child to be checked by the dentist even at an early age. Sugary drinks and foods must be given during meals only because tooth decay is often a problem with growing children.

Some patients may need to medication to control their condition. If this is the case, one must make sure that any medicine is sugar free. The dentist must know all the kinds of medications the patient is taking so that necessary precautions may be undertaken. For those patients with mobility problems, they can use an electric toothbrush to reach all areas of the mouth without exerting much effort from their end. Some manual toothbrushes can be fitted with special handgrips so that patients will find it easy to hold their toothbrush.

In some cases, a patient may need to be sedated especially if he/she becomes very nervous. The dentist must be able to do his/her work so he/she needs the patient to be calm and relaxed. The type of sedation need varies according to the patient’s medical condition, age, and weight. Some patients are given oxygen gases and nitrous oxide through the nose to keep them sedated. Although this type of sedation is the most simple and safest, it is not advisable for patients with multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, or those with very limited understanding. Other dentists may also opt for hypnosis.
